The Athena brand, one of the UK’s most recognisable names in poster and print retail, has been brought to market, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of British high street and popular culture history.

BPI Asset Advisory, a RICS regulated team of surveyors and business advisors specialising in valuation and asset disposal services, has been instructed to market the trademarks owned by Athena Licensing Ltd, comprising two recently renewed UK trademarks, including the name and stylised logo, together with a recently renewed EU trademark.

Founded in 1964, Athena was a defining feature of British high streets throughout the 1980s and 1990s, achieving widespread recognition for its distinctive posters, prints and gift products. At its peak, the brand operated a network of more than 160 stores nationwide. For many teenagers and students growing up during the pre-digital era, Athena represented far more than a retailer, becoming a cultural icon associated with identity, aspiration and self-expression.

From monochrome New York skylines and jazz photography to fantasy artwork, movie posters and surreal imagery, Athena helped shape the visual style of bedrooms, student houses and first flats across the UK. At its peak, the brand became synonymous with affordable and accessible wall art for a generation.

Among its most famous works is the globally recognised Tennis Girl poster from 1976, alongside other landmark images including L’Enfant, Beyond City Limits, and the 1976 Lord of the Rings artwork by Jimmy Cauty. These pieces cemented Athena’s place in British cultural history, bridging commercial art and mass-market appeal.

Over the decades, the brand has maintained strong public recognition, with its imagery continuing to appear in modern media and popular culture. Most recently, Athena was referenced in Alan Carr’s television series Changing Ends, underlining the enduring nostalgia and recognition surrounding the brand decades after its high street presence.

Andrew Cromack, Director at BPI Asset Advisory, commented:
“Athena is a name that immediately resonates with generations of people across the UK. Brands with this level of recognition and cultural connection rarely come to market, making this a unique opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of British retail history.”

The sale presents an opportunity for investors, brand owners, licensing businesses and media groups seeking to acquire an established intellectual property asset with strong historic recognition and ongoing cultural relevance.
